Can you be obese and happy?

The FTO gene, a gene for obesity , according to the study conducted at McMaster University with more than 17,000 DNA samples from 21 different countries, would be correlated with a lower risk of depression, order 8% . Recall that other studies have previously shown that depression was a genetic component to 40 % . The 8% difference is significant, but quite modest , the authors acknowledge . But this is , according to them, a first step towards further research and who knows, new treatments.
Can we fight against obesity and depression by acting on genetics?

To Dr. Jean- Michel Borys , endocrinologist and obesity specialist , the study may well be interesting, it remains limited. Indeed, it is based solely on epidemiological observation and yet there is nothing to explain with certainty the mode of action of this gene on depression. Regarding research in order to neutralize the gene to influence the risk of obesity and depression , it remains difficult to envisage , according to Dr. Borys " neutralize this gene can lead to over- express another gene and cause unexpected side effects. " This study mainly shows the complexity of genetic mechanisms and the fact that the same gene can have different actions in different areas.

Remember also , in passing, that if obese are often depressed, it is because they are exposed to social vengeance , and they are in a situation of failure regarding weight loss. Dieting are major providers of depression , loss of self-esteem , when the inevitable weight regain that follows.
